Tues Dec 23 [23 December 1913] Off at 6, very cold and as soon as the sun rose a thick mist closed round us. I walked till 9.30 the mist in white frost on our clothes. We passed under the Najjar Umm Idu and so out onto a flat plain. From 8.30 to 9.15 not a plant grew - I think this is the W. Muqah marked in the maps. It goes down to the Ruhbah. At 10.30 the fog lifted and we saw the Harrah to the right running NW with the W. Umgad running round its borders. We ourselves were in the valley and remained in it till 12.15 when it went off to the left round the Tell Firdas, whereas we went to the right of Firdas and dropped into the Wadi again at 2.25, just opposite the tomb of Ibn Madi one of the shaikhs of the 'Isa whose camel fell here and killed him about 20 years ago. Under Firdas Awaiseh Abu 'Ali woke up and recounted how his tribe had raided here the 'Anazeh, Ibn killed a man and a horse and taken 40 camels. Since when they have been gom. In the valley, just about where we first touched it, Muhammad al Bassam with 200 camels going to Nejd [Najd], had been attacked by the Masa'id and had driven them back, said 'Ali. The ghadir was full of water. After the tombs we marched along the ghadir and came into camp at 3.30. We got heaps of fitr this morning, great big ones growing among shajar and a sort of fennel. Marah of the W. 'Ali in the valley. East of the Harrah all this country is Hamad. As Ali and I walked on this afternoon looking for a camping ground, he stopped and said "Ya sitt, let us wait for the dululs. We have no arms."
