Mon. Ap 20. [20 April 1914] Heavy rain in the night - winter rain. The
men trenched my tent and it held good with swelled canvass [sic].
When we came down to Muhaiwir [Muhaywir] (in a temp. dropped 20?)
the clear pool was dry - it was only a water hole. In the ghadir a large
pool but matrub. We dug holes in the sandy bank and got water, but
little better. I have enough Wizeh water. All the bank was fouled.
Tents of the Swailmat (Ibn Bekr) in the valley and lots of camels going
up to pasture. On the flat Hamad above 1000s of them. They drifted
across the post road like a wide slow river. The 'Anazeh being
muhakkanun[?] wd not despoil caravans in a ghazzu like the
Shammar or the Daffir. The herdsmen walked or rode with us for half
hours and Asaf was careful to say that I came from Hayil [Hail] which
caused much admiration. One of the men came on with us and is our
guest. He is going to Ibn Hadhdhal. (Ibn Mijlad is shaikh of the
Sulatin.) He asked why I had not horses and carriages. "Kafi" said I.
"Ana arid ahsan lakum" said he. Asaf told me they raided the Wulud
Sulaiman last year and took much chesb. He said they were the
Wulud al Shaitan. I said I was glad and we spoke of Saiyah. "Afrak
al sinain wa azrak al 'ainair la takhowwi" said he. Azrak: 'awi, one
eyed. We saw a pair of big duck like birds, shhaibi. Asaf talked of
tais, a sort of dur. We killed a snake - hamash, hamish. Also an
aqrab in camp. Fellah said a propos of our camp last night "La tinzil
bil faid (slope) wa lan bil qaid[?]." We crossed the W. al Za'i and
stopped for 20 min. for the camels to graze. I fell asleep at once with
my arm for a pillow. At 1.47 we sighted the first tells of the Ga'rah and
dropped into it at 2.10 when we came into camp near the derb. I
registered no higher temp than 67. Cloudy. They say to one another
Ya bedowwi with a strong accent on the second syllable.
