Sat 30. [30 April 1898] Up early, breakfasted and went off to Hongkong Hotel. Very hot. The houses with their deep verandahs look as if they had been gutted by fire. Washed and dressed. After lunch we all went by train up to the Peak where we got into clouds and came down. M [Maurice] and I took chairs and went off to find Mr Whitehead whom we finally ran to earth at the bank. Very friendly. The gardens full of Longiflorum lilies and [space left blank]. Dinner and early to bed. Sikh policemen, coolies in big hats.
