Mon. May 2 [2 May 1898] Fine. Went out riding at 9, up Happy Valley and onto the top of the hill. Delicious after the rain, but pretty hot. We rode a long way on a walking path and had to come back. Lovely view. Lunched at the Peak and went up in chairs to the flagstaff from whence wonderful view. Came down in chairs and at 5.30 to Canton [Guangzhou] by the Fatzhan, we 2 alone. On board Mr and Mrs Bennett, missionaries and Mr Dennison, Mr Danby's brother in law. Nice Scotch Captain. Very cool and comfortable. Anchored at 8 o'clock at the mouth of the river, junks with lights a big moon.
