Thurs. 6. [6 April 1899] Independence Day. Flags and troops and functions. We drove off to 10 to Eleusis [Elevsis] all along the sacred way. At Daphne, the head of the pass, we stopped to see a Byzantine church with interesting 12th century mosaics. As we got down the other side we saw Salamis across the bay. We lunched on the marble steps of the Temple of the Mysteries, in hot sun. It then went in and turned very cold. We wandered about and examined the confusing foundations, and then drove home, getting in at 5. After tea we walked to Hadrian's Temple of Jupiter, golden in the sunset, and then climbed the Mouseion and saw the Parthenon all yellow and Hymettus [Imittos] all purple. Mr Baron and Mr Bell dined.
