Tues Feb. 4. [4 February 1902] Still grey, indeed after a glimmer of
sun it became grayer [sic] than we have had it yet. Spent most of the
morning reading the Itali‰nische Reise in the theatre and playing with
a charming little girl there, Cicely Gordon by name. After lunch walked
with Hugo nearly to Isola Bella and home by almond groves a vision
of exquisite flower. Walked down to the station and left about 5.30 for
Messina where we arrived at 6.30. Gerald and Cis met us and came
with us to our hotel, the T....., a horrid place. We dined in a very hot
room after which Father and I walked out and happened upon the
Duomo in the dark.
