Sat 28. [28 January 1905] Better. A cold and windy day. I saw the mosque and the grotto where John the Baptist and other celebrities were supposed to have been buried, and one of the Sheikh's sons took me over the town and showed me the remains of the columned streets. Someone had excavated in the middle of the town and deep down had found a great sarcophagus with a lion on the lid, probably Roman. Then the govt had stopped them. From the city gate one sees the sea. Attended Sheikh Sadik's school and got off about 1 o'clock. Habib came to see how I was and we rode together. Strong wind and cold so I put up at the monastery where two monks, Ibn Arub, made me welcome. Went to the hospital and had tea with Dr Wright and his wife. This place is frightfully fanatical. Had dinner with the 2 monks, we conversed in Arabic. NB Miss Kitchin at the hospital likes to have Xmas cards sent her.
