Thursday. 95 Sloane St. Dearest Mother. We have had the most delightful day. We started about 10.30, Gerald Florence Uncle Frank and I, got to Ascot half an hour before the first race which we saw from the top of the Royal Enclosure Stand; then we lunched in the Bachelors' tent, Billy being our host - I sat next Colonel Talbot and was much amused. He had a Carpenter niece with him. Then we went back and saw all the races over the railing of the Royal Enclosure which is just opposite the winning post. The family had small bets on, mostly unsuccessful! (I didn't bet I need not say.) Lord Granville was very funny - he and Gerald generally managed to back the horse that came in last but one! Uncle Frank was such a dear - it's the most amusing sight to see him solemnly laying on his pound over the railing of the Ring! Mrs Will Cockerell came and talked to us, she made us very tired, she talked such a lot. At the end of all we had tea in the Guards' tent and came home very comfortably, getting in about 7.30. I am going again tomorrow; Auntie Mary says it is too tiring as she is going out in the evening. It certainly is very tiring - I shall be dead tomorrow with a ball on top. My gown was a dream and was much admired. I am going this evening with Auntie Mary and Florence and the Johnsons to sit out of doors in the Imperial Institute and listen to the band - rather nice as it is very hot.
Florence and I did amuse ourselves so much! What a dear Lord Granville is. Ever your affectionate daughter Gertrude
