Tuesday. Dearest Mother. I send the pins. Should you think me an awful beast if I stayed here till Monday? I ought to come back really, but I might leave Miss Beattie to do the library really, if you didn't mind. I think I will go to the Dixons. The difficulty is not so much that I feel slack as that I can't fly round. However I might dance very little. In that case Lizzie will have to take the blue trimming off my white gown and put black on; she knows. I shall have no other as I don't want to wear my best new one.
Hugo is going to his ball. I have not seen him yet as I was lunching with Caroline, but I expect him every minute. Mr Chirol came to tea and stayed a long time. I am going in to Sue's after dinner, with Hugo, to hear some music, and then on to a party at the Russells. Ever your affectionate daughter Gertrude
Caroline will love to see Papa on Thursday week between tea and dinner. Mrs Bell tells me your gown is lovely.
